Ways We Might Be Disrupting Our Own Change Process

Self-Compassion

Having boundaries and expectations that land on extremes; the “always” and “never” framework. Instead, healthy lives in the middle: learn to reassess these as your context and capacity changes.

Seeing challenges—new and familiar ones—as regression; Instead, allow yourself to view it as refinement, an opportunity to hone in those problem-solving and coping skills.

Confusing boredom with stagnation; Much of our healing happens in stillness, silence and in solitude. Healing can feel boring, it can even feel lonely. That’s OK – give yourself the time and space to return to self.

“Pushing through” or ignoring your level of readiness; Instead, pause and be curious about the resistance. Don’t let the judgement of your own journey get in the way of meaningful change. Therapy can only take you as far as you’re willing to be honest with yourself.

Declaring self-talk to be our true, unfiltered feelings about self; Instead, build awareness around the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Then choose your self-talk wisely.
