The Power of Encouragement

Self-Compassion

When someone you love is navigating a difficult time, it can feel very natural to use encouragement to positively motivate them. That might sound like, “I can see this is a moment of suffering and it sounds like you’re doing your best;” or “Anyone in your position would feel that way, it totally makes sense!”

However, when we ourselves are going through a personal struggle, we might quickly slide into shame or judgement. That might sound like, “Of course that would happen, I never do anything right;” or “I don’t deserve good things anyway.”

Do you notice the difference in words, attitude and tone between our self-talk and how we talk with a loved one? Take a moment to consider how past experiences, external and internal factors have led you to treating yourself so differently?

I often say encouragement is the lost love language; Encouragement is a powerful tool to not only motivate, but to also express your fondness and admiration. To have someone hold faith in you, believe in you so strongly that they trust you will overcome the storm is so deeply moving.

Why don’t we practice the same response when we’re personally suffering too? Try speaking to yourself as if you were a friend or even a younger version of yourself and just notice what shifts occur.
